How to use the music generator

In less than a minute you walk away with a brand-new track, ready to download. This guide explains what each option does and how to get the sound you imagined.

What the generator does

The generator composes a song from scratch with every click. It picks a chord progression that suits the genre, writes the melody, the bass line and the drums, and plays everything with instruments synthesized in your browser. Nothing is downloaded from a library of ready-made music: every track is put together on the spot.

Step by step

  1. Choose the genre. There are 20 options, from jazz and bossa nova to techno and synthwave. The genre sets the harmony, the drum groove and the instruments used.
  2. Choose the style. Each genre has variations. In lo-fi, for example, some styles are calmer and others punchier. Try more than one.
  3. Set the tempo (BPM). Leave it blank to let the generator pick a typical value for the genre, or type any number from 40 to 240. Below 80 sounds slow and relaxed; above 130 sounds energetic.
  4. Choose the duration. From 10 to 120 seconds, in steps of 5. For jingles and intros, 15 to 30 seconds is usually enough.
  5. Key and mode (optional). The key is the central note of the song. The major mode sounds brighter, the minor more introspective, and the pentatonic modes have that open sound of blues and Eastern music. On "Automatic", the generator decides.
  6. Click Generate song. The track appears in the "Generated songs" list and starts playing.

Options that make a difference

Loop or no loop ending

With loop, the end of the song joins the beginning seamlessly, ideal as background for a video, game or live stream. Without loop, the song ends on a final chord, like a regular track.

Seed

The seed is the number that guides all the random choices. If you liked a song, write down its seed: with the same number and the same options, the generator creates exactly the same track again. Leave the field empty for a new seed with every click.

Instruments

Tick instruments to hear only them: just piano, just saxophone, just bass and drums. It's handy for making a practice track or isolating a part to use in your project. The "clear" button goes back to the full band.

Listen, compare and download

The last 12 songs stay in the list while the page is open, so you can compare versions. Click anywhere on the waveform to jump to that point.

To download or save a song, sign in to your account (it's free, with Google or email). The download button delivers a .zip file with two things:

  • The audio, as MP3 (128, 192 or 320 kbps) or as stereo WAV at 44.1 kHz and 16 bits. Choose it in "File format".
  • The .mid file, with the notes of each instrument. Open it in GarageBand, FL Studio, Reaper, MuseScore or another editor to change the sounds or edit notes.

Quick tips

  • Generate three or four versions with the same options and keep the best. Each seed brings a different melody.
  • For a study mood, combine lo-fi, a BPM between 70 and 85 and minor mode.
  • For an upbeat jingle, try funk or disco at 110 to 120 BPM with a 15-second duration.
